She is born to a navy officer (retd.) who is Telugu, CHITRAPU UDAY BHASKAR and ira bhaskar, who is a bihari. swara’s maternal grandparents belong to Varanasi. swara’s mother is a professor of cinema studio at JNU, DELHI.
Swara has spent her childhood in Delhi. She completed her schooling from SARDAR PATEL VIDYALAYA. In MIRANDA HOUSE she did her graduation in English literature. There she was a good friend of MINISHA LAMBA, who is also a Bollywood actress. She did her master’s in sociology from JNU, DELHI. Poste- haste to this she joined in a theatre group “ACT ONE”, in Delhi.
She moved to Mumbai in 2008. “madholala keep walking” is her debut film in 2009. in 2010 she played a supporting role in the movie GUZARISH opposite to Aishwarya rai and Hrithik Roshan. guzarish was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. But both the movies performed poorly at the box office. Then she performed in the independent low budget film (mumblecore), the untitled Karthik Krishnan project. All her initial 3 projects went flop and her talent remained in the veil.
In 2011 she acted in the romantic comedy-drama TANU WEDS MANU, where she did the role of a to-be-bride. There she gathered all the attention from the audience as well as filmmakers. after this, her talent was unveiled and she performed for many films like RANJHANA, TANU WED MANU RETURNS, PREM RATAN DHAN PAYYO, NIL BATTEY SANNATA,PADMAVAAT, VEERE DI WEDDING, AURANGZEB, and many more.
